Products are associated with a range of sustainability impacts along their value chain, from the sourcing of raw materials, through manufacture, to use and end of life management. But if the issues are inadequately addressed, the results can be catastrophic, with production delayed, goods impounded, contracts lost and customer choice leading to market share dropping through the floor.
Are you confident that you understand all the issues? Are you managing the risks associated with product sustainability impacts? And are you maximising the business benefits that could flow from understanding and communicating product performance? This briefing highlights the range of sustainability issues we face and explores examples of responses to protect and enhance market share.

Products are associated with a range of sustainability impacts along their value chain, from the sourcing of raw materials, through manufacture, to use and end of life management. Some of these issues, like chemical registration and labelling, are regulated, with the amount of regulation rapidly increasing. Others, such as the sourcing of raw materials and the product environmental footprint, are increasingly of interest to governments, customers and other stakeholders, where performance is driven by broader policy and interventions, and by the response of the market. In both cases, getting the management of the issues right facilitates smooth and uninterrupted access to market, and can help in discriminating brands from competitors and in growing market share.
