Most British expats in Hong Kong love the efficiency of the place, and especially the simplicity and cheapness of the tax system. However, moving from a low-tax country with a simple tax system to a high-tax country with one of the most evolved tax systems in the world is a daunting challenge.
For many there is a lot at stake, particularly where money has been made and wealth created during an expat career. Navigating the UK tax system with all of its nuances can be a bit like tiptoeing through a minefield, especially when you consider that in the worst cases, income tax can apply at 50%, capital gains tax at 28%, inheritance tax at 40% and of course the Revenue’s own guidance on many of these matters is a masterpiece of glorious ambiguity.
